Steve Gray is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan Law School and a Faculty member of the African Studies Center. He holds a Juris Doctorate from the University of Illinois College of Law (1987). His work focuses on legal aid, rule of law initiatives in Southern Africa, and clinical legal education. Since 2014, he has directed the University of Michigan’s pioneering Unemployment Insurance Clinic, where first-year law students represent workers denied unemployment benefits.
Gray spent 2008-09 on a Fulbright at the University of Namibia Faculty of Law, establishing a legal aid clinic and collaborating on rule of law reforms. He continues to engage with Namibia, developing internship programs for Michigan law students through his role as Director of the Program for International Law and Development. His international work emphasizes integrating practical legal training with global development challenges.
