Dr Steve Goddard is a Lecturer in French at St. Catherine's College, University of Oxford. He holds a BA in Classics and Modern Languages (Latin and French) from St John’s College, Oxford, and a DPhil on Flaubert and the Literature of Classical Antiquity. Since 1994, he has held teaching positions across Oxford colleges, focusing on French language and literature instruction. His research explores 19th-century French novels, particularly Flaubert’s engagement with classical literature, and the reception of classical tragedy in 20th-century French drama. He has published articles and reviews on Flaubert, Baudelaire, and classical influences in French literature.
Teaching: Undergraduate courses include French translation, modern French literature (Paper VIII), and works by Stendhal, Baudelaire, and Flaubert. His language instruction covers grammar, prose composition, and unseen translation.
Publications: Key works include ‘Flaubert: the classical dimension’ (1999), a review of Madame Bovary (2004), and analyses of Flaubert’s intertextuality with Apuleius and Ovid (2005), as well as Baudelaire’s Tableaux parisiens (2006).
Additional Activities: He serves as a councillor on Oxford City Council and has stood for parliamentary office three times. Hobbies include birdwatching, travel, and reading.
