Steve Conolly is the Montford G. Cook Professor of Bioengineering and Professor of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley. He leads the Conolly Lab, renowned for pioneering advancements in Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI), including the world’s highest spatial resolution MPI scanner, projection MPI technology, and 3D Projection-Reconstruction MPI systems. His research focuses on developing novel biomedical imaging modalities, particularly leveraging magnetic nanoparticles for applications in cell tracking, vascular imaging, and cancer diagnostics.
His lab’s innovations span hardware design, nanoparticle optimization, and clinical translation of MPI for non-invasive diagnostics. Key research areas include superparamagnetic and superferromagnetic nanoparticle characterization, MPI system optimization, and theranostic platforms combining imaging with therapies like magnetic hyperthermia.
Publications highlight breakthroughs in MPI resolution, nanoparticle behavior under thermal and magnetic fields, and clinical applications such as gastrointestinal health monitoring, CAR-T cell tracking, and stroke imaging. Conolly’s work bridges electrical engineering, bioengineering, and clinical medicine, advancing MPI toward widespread medical adoption.
