Stephen Wise

Dr Stephen Wise is a Lecturer at the University of Sheffield's School of Geography and Planning, where he has specialized in GIS since joining in 1990. His work bridges technical GIS development with applications in geomorphology and environmental analysis.

Education:

• Geography degree from Bristol University
• PhD in sediment movement using Cs-137 and Pb-210 dating techniques (London)

Research Focus: Steve's research centers on DEM error analysis, Geomorphometry, and GIS methodology. He investigates how errors in Digital Elevation Models propagate through spatial analyses and leverages global DEMs to address geomorphological questions. His methodological contributions span GIS data capture and spatial analysis techniques.

Professional Activities:

• Chair of the committee that selected ARC/INFO for academic use in the UK
• Member of GISRUK Steering Committee
• Participated in JISC/OS liaison committee for Ordnance Survey digital mapping access

Personal Interests: Steve is a member of the Appalachian String Band "Down Trodden String Band" and organizes music/dance events in Bakewell. He regularly plays guitar and octave mandolin at The Manners pub on Thursday evenings.
