Stephen Udry is a Professor of History and Asian Studies at Carthage College, where he also serves as Director of the Asian Studies Program. He joined the faculty in 2000 and has held academic roles in Taiwan, including teaching English for five years. His expertise spans Asian cultural history, with a focus on Manchu Shamanism as highlighted by his doctoral dissertation titled Muttering Mystics: Manchu Shamanism.
Prof. Udry holds an A.B. from Columbia College (Columbia University), and M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Washington. He has conducted extensive fieldwork and travel across Asia, including residencies in Taiwan, and visits to China, Japan, Korea, Nepal, Tibet, and Thailand.
His research interests bridge religious studies and cultural anthropology, particularly exploring indigenous spiritual practices in Northeast Asia. Though no specific grants or awards are noted, his academic contributions reflect a deep engagement with marginalized cultural histories.
