Stephen T McGarvey is Professor of Epidemiology and Professor of Anthropology at Brown University's School of Public Health. An elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Human Biology and recently received the 2025 Franz Boas Distinguished Achievement Award from the Human Biology Association. His research spans human population biology and global health with particular focus on Pacific Islander and Sub-Saharan African populations.
McGarvey's research interests center on modernization-related socio-economic and behavioral changes, genetic and environmental influences on obesity and cardiovascular disease risk factors, and child nutritional status. His work examines how rapid economic development affects health outcomes, particularly in low and middle income countries including Samoa, American Samoa, South Africa, and Kenya. He investigates the complex interplay between genetic susceptibility (notably CREBRF variants in Samoans) and environmental factors in obesity epidemiology.
His publication record demonstrates consistent focus on Pacific Islander health with particular attention to obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease trends. Recent work analyzes genetic adaptations in Samoan populations, hypertension patterns in Sub-Saharan Africa, and integrated care models for HIV and non-communicable diseases. His research integrates anthropological perspectives with epidemiological methods to understand population health transitions.

McGarvey has led numerous community-based interventions in American Samoa, including culturally tailored diabetes management programs using community health workers. His work on migration patterns in South Africa contributes to understanding the epidemiological transition in developing contexts.
