Stephen Scott-Bottoms is a Professor of Contemporary Theatre and Performance at the University of Manchester since 2012. Previously, he held academic roles at the Universities of Leeds (2005-2012) and Glasgow (1993-2005). He serves as Research Co-ordinator for the Department of Drama and Film and has held leadership roles such as Head of Department. His work bridges theatre studies, performance theory, and interdisciplinary environmental research, notably through collaborations with institutions like the Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission.
His research interests include American theatre history, performance theory (e.g., Jacques Rancière's influence), applied theatre in prisons, and environmental storytelling. Key projects include the AHRC-funded 'Before the Flood' and 'Towards Hydro-Citizenship,' which explore climate resilience through site-based performance. He co-founded the social enterprise Vesper Hill to advance storytelling for resilience.
Notable publications include Incarceration Games (2024), Playing Underground (2004, awarded Outstanding Achievement), and collaborations with Goat Island and Diane Torr. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action and responsible consumption.
