Stephen Schneider is an Associate Professor at the University of Louisville (UofL), specializing in rhetoric and composition. His research examines intersections between education, social movements, and rhetorical theory. Key focuses include the Highlander Folk School’s educational role in social justice movements, rhetorical strategies of civil rights organizations, and the evolving concept of the public sphere in democratic contexts.
Dr. Schneider holds a BA from the Australian National University, and MA and PhD from Pennsylvania State University. His teaching portfolio includes courses on rhetoric history, social movement rhetoric, critical theory, and African American literature.
His current book project explores relationships between the Southern Conference for Human Welfare, New Deal policies, and civil rights rhetoric. He also investigates economic systems and collective action through a project titled Publics, Communities, Crowds: Rhetoric and Collective Action in the Age of Debt.
Notable publications include his monograph on the Highlander Folk School (2014) and essays in College English, JAC, and Rhetoric & Public Affairs. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary rhetorical theory, emphasizing education’s role in social change.
