Stephen Raudenbush is the Lewis-Sebring Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago, affiliated with the Harris School of Public Policy Studies, the Department of Sociology, and the College. He holds a B.A., Ed.M., and Ed.D. from Harvard University.
His research focuses on statistical models for child and youth development in social contexts, including classrooms, schools, and neighborhoods. He pioneered hierarchical linear models, widely used in longitudinal and multilevel research. Current projects explore early childhood literacy/math skills development and methods to assess educational quality.
Notable awards include membership in the National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Educational Research Association's Distinguished Contributions Award.
His work emphasizes scaling educational experiments to reduce inequality and refining causal inference in multilevel studies. He collaborates across disciplines, integrating quantitative methods with sociological and policy research.
