Stephen Pratt is a Professor and Associate Director of Graduate Programs in the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University (ASU). He holds a Ph.D. in Neurobiology and Behavior from Cornell University (1997) and a B.A. in Biology from Harvard University (1988). His research focuses on understanding how leaderless social insect colonies, such as ants and bees, exhibit collective intelligence through decentralized decision-making processes. He applies experimental, mathematical, and computational approaches to study behavioral rules, communication networks, and group cognition in these systems. His work also bridges biology and engineering, translating insights from social insects to inspire robot swarm algorithms and collective transport strategies.
Pratt's research interests span social insect behavior, collective decision-making, and the application of biological principles to robotics. He has received the Founder’s Day Faculty Research Award from ASU (2013) and a Long-term Fellowship from the Human Frontier Science Program (1998–2000). His lab, the Social Insect Research Group, explores topics like cooperative transport, nest site selection, and information sharing in ants. He has advised numerous graduate and undergraduate students, contributing to their research in behavioral ecology and sociobiology.
