Stephen Milder is a Research Fellow at the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, conducting a German Research Foundation (DFG) funded project (2020–24) on the emergence of climate politics during German reunification and the post-Cold War transformation of Europe. Previously, he served as Assistant Professor of Politics and Society at the University of Groningen (2015), Mellon Foundation post-doctoral fellow at Rutgers Center for Historical Analysis, and Visiting Assistant Professor of History at Duke University.
His doctoral training was completed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2012), where he specialized in grassroots anti-nuclear activism in Baden and Alsace. This research culminated in his monograph Greening Democracy: The Anti-Nuclear Movement and Political Environmentalism in West Germany and Beyond, 1968–1983 (Cambridge University Press, 2017).
Milder's research centers on the historical intersections of environmentalism, social movements, and political transformation in 20th-century Europe. He examines how grassroots activism shaped policy frameworks, with particular focus on nuclear disarmament, democratic praxis, and the transnational networks that propelled green politics. His work bridges German history with broader European and global contexts, revealing how local movements influenced international environmental governance.
Recent publications demonstrate a methodological shift toward analyzing the material foundations of environmental politics, connecting technological innovation (e.g., renewable energy development) with ideological shifts. His work increasingly engages with contemporary crises, examining how historical legacies inform current debates on climate policy, German rearmament, and the viability of Green New Deal frameworks.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Mellon Foundation post-doctoral fellowship
Milder currently directs a major DFG-funded research project while maintaining active collaborations across European academic networks. Though no formal advisees are documented, his editorial work (e.g., Rethinking Social Movements after '68) demonstrates mentorship through scholarly curation. His research integrates archival work with contemporary policy analysis, often through team-based projects like the Petra Kelly virtual exhibition.
At the Rachel Carson Center, he operates within an interdisciplinary hub connecting historians, environmental scientists, and policy scholars, contributing to the center's mission of bridging historical analysis with urgent ecological challenges through collaborative research initiatives and public-facing scholarship.
