Stephen Melczer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Combinatorics and Optimization at the University of Waterloo, with a cross-appointment in the School of Computer Science. His research focuses on analytic combinatorics in several variables (ACSV) and its applications to combinatorics, computer science, and mathematics. He holds doctorates from École normale supérieure de Lyon and the University of Waterloo (2017). Previously, he was a CRM-ISM postdoctoral fellow at UQAM (2019–2020) and a postdoc at the University of Pennsylvania (2017–2019).
His research interests include leveraging computational algebraic geometry, analysis, and topology to develop tools for enumerative combinatorics. He has authored three books, including An Invitation to Analytic Combinatorics and Analytic Combinatorics in Several Variables, and has contributed to over 30 peer-reviewed publications. Notably, his work has resolved conjectures in lattice path enumeration and advanced algorithmic methods in symbolic computation.
Melczer actively serves on academic committees such as the CanaDAM Executive Committee and the AofA Steering Committee. He co-chaired the AofA 2025 conference and organized workshops at prestigious venues like the Fields Institute. His students include Jeremy Chizewer, recipient of the 2024 Governor General Gold Medal.
He has received the Governor General Silver Academic Medal and frequently collaborates with researchers globally, contributing to conferences like FPSAC and SIAM Applied Algebraic Geometry. His research group develops computational tools, including the sage_acsv package, to rigorously analyze combinatorial structures.
