Stephen Machin is a Professor of Economics and Director of the Centre for Economic Performance (CEP) at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He holds fellowships at the British Academy and the Society of Labor Economists. His expertise spans Labour Economics, Industrial and Urban Economics, Education, and Crime. Machin earned his PhD in Economics from the University of Warwick. His research focuses on topics such as wage dynamics, minimum wage policies, educational outcomes, and crime reduction strategies. Notable works include "What Do We Know And What Should We Do About Social Mobility?" (2020) and "Social Mobility And Its Enemies" (2018). Recent studies address post-Brexit economic challenges, pandemic impacts on youth, and the interplay between education and crime. He advises policy through CEP’s research and teaches EC533: Labour Economics for Research Students at LSE.
