Stephen M. Wechsler is a Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Texas at Austin, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts. He holds a PhD in Linguistics from Stanford University. His research focuses on syntactic theory, semantics, grammatical agreement, and self-reference, with recent work emphasizing usage-based, evolutionary, and information-theoretic approaches to grammar. He authored The Semantic Basis of Argument Structure (1995) and co-authored The Many Faces of Agreement (2005), and edited Word Meaning and Syntax (2015). He held the Alma Cowden Madden Centennial Professorship from 2013 to 2016.
Dr. Wechsler teaches advanced courses such as Syntax I, Syntax/Semantics: Structure and Meaning of Utterances, and Research in Syntax and Semantics. His recent work explores reinforcement learning in grammar emergence and case-marking systems. He has presented at CogSci and published in Brill's Contemporary Linguistics.
His research spans lexicalism, HPSG, LFG frameworks, and the interface between word meaning and syntax. He advises on syntactic theory and coordinates experimental syntax-semantics research.
