Stephen M. Wagner is a Professor and Graduate Studies Coordinator in the Art History Department at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), serving since 2004. He holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Delaware, an M.A. from Florida State University, and a B.A. in Spanish from Emory University. His academic career includes teaching roles at Bucks County Community College (2003–04) and the University of Delaware (1998–2001). He has also held administrative roles, including CEO of Southern Alloy Steel Corporation (1984–91).
Wagner’s research focuses on medieval art, manuscripts, and textiles, particularly exploring the intersection of materials like silk with cultural and artistic developments. His work includes studies on Ottonian and Salian manuscripts, medieval monastic reform, and Byzantine influences. He is a member of organizations such as the Byzantine Studies Association of North America and the College Art Association.
He has been recognized with the Robert Silver Award for Non-traditional Students (1998) and a Tuition Scholarship (1997). His publications and presentations span topics like textile impacts on manuscript art and medieval cultural artifacts. While no formal student advisees are listed, his teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses in art history, including 'Medieval Art and Architecture' and 'Early Christian and Byzantine Art.'
