Stephen Lucas is a Professor of Applied Mathematics at the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, James Madison University (JMU), since 2006. His research focuses on computational mathematics, numerical methods, and interdisciplinary topics including numerical integration, differential equations, number theory, and graph theory. He holds a PhD in Applied and Computational Mathematics from the University of Sydney (1993) and a BMath (Hons) from the University of Wollongong (1988). His work bridges pure and applied mathematics, with contributions to areas like the history of computation and number representation.
His publications explore topics such as Bessel function integrals, π approximation techniques, and game theory applications (e.g., Chutes and Ladders). He emphasizes cross-disciplinary collaboration, with research extending into engineering and scientific disciplines. His teaching includes courses like The Nature of Mathematics: A History of Computation.
Lucas is affiliated with Roop Hall 112, reachable via email lucassk@jmu.edu or phone (540) 568-5104. His research has been supported through grants and collaborations, though specific grant details are not provided here.
