Stephen Lisberger is the George Barth Geller Distinguished Professor for Research in Neurobiology and Professor of Neurobiology at Duke University School of Medicine, where he also serves as Chair of the Department of Neurobiology. He is a Faculty Network Member of the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences. His research focuses on understanding how the brain learns motor skills and uses visual information to guide movement, primarily through studies of eye movements in non-human primates.
Lisberger earned his Ph.D. from the University of Washington in 1976. His academic journey has been dedicated to unraveling the neural mechanisms underlying sensory-motor integration and motor learning.
Dr. Lisberger's research investigates how the brain learns motor skills and uses visual information to guide movement. His laboratory primarily studies smooth pursuit eye movements in behaving non-human primates, using a combination of behavioral analysis, neural recordings, and computational modeling. His work has revealed fundamental principles about how neural circuits transform sensory representations into motor commands, with particular focus on the role of the cerebellum in motor learning. He has made significant discoveries about how the brain handles "noise" in neural signals and how this relates to behavioral variation.

Although his experimental primate laboratory is scheduled to close in mid-2025 due to challenges of maintaining a small non-human primate facility, his theoretical and computational work continues to advance the field.
