Dr Stephen Kemp is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Edinburgh's School of Social and Political Science. He holds a BA and MPhil from Massey University (New Zealand) and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. His research focuses on social theory, epistemology, and the ontology of the social world, particularly exploring debates around social scientific knowledge, structure/agency dynamics, and actor-network theory. Kemp's work interrogates the purposes and justifications of social science while critically engaging with methodologies like critical realism and pragmatism.
His academic background includes extensive contributions to sociology and philosophy of science, with key interests spanning risk studies, gendered risk perception, and the sociology of knowledge/power relationships. He actively supervises doctoral research in social theory, philosophy of social science, risk studies, and human/non-human divides. Kemp's recent publications address topics such as objectivity in social sciences, organizational theory critiques, and reflexive sociological methodologies.
He maintains office hours in the Chrystal Macmillan Building (Room 6.30) and is accessible via email at s.kemp@ed.ac.uk. His work bridges theoretical sociology with contemporary debates about knowledge production and societal complexity.
