Dr Stephen Johnston is an Associate Professor in Psychology at Swansea University's School of Psychology, part of the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Science. His research focuses on attention, inhibition, and the effects of video gaming, utilizing neuroimaging techniques like fMRI and MR spectroscopy. He holds a BSc in Astrophysics and Psychology from Keele University and a PhD in Mathematical Physics from Coventry University.
His work spans cognitive neuroscience, investigating neural mechanisms underlying attentional processes, decision-making in gambling disorders, and autonomic adaptations related to hydration. He has supervised multiple PhD students, including those examining video game effects on executive functions and eye-tracking applications in aging populations.
Dr Johnston has contributed to over 40 peer-reviewed articles in journals such as European Journal of Neuroscience, NeuroImage, and BMJ. His research highlights include neurofeedback interventions for smoking cessation, GABA/glutamate's role in impulsivity, and pandemic-related healthcare worker wellbeing studies. He teaches modules on brain structure/function and medical laboratory techniques.
