Stephen J. Ware is the Frank Edwards Tyler Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Kansas School of Law. He holds a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School (1990) and a B.A. in American History and Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania (1987). His academic career includes roles at Cumberland School of Law and visiting appointments at Ohio State University and William & Mary. He specializes in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), Bankruptcy, Contracts, and Judicial Selection, with a focus on international and comparative dimensions.
Professor Ware has authored four books, over 50 law review articles, and has been cited by the U.S. Supreme Court and numerous other cases. His research explores arbitration, mediation, consumer law, and judicial appointment processes. He has testified before Congress, appeared in media outlets like the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, and is an elected member of the American Law Institute (ALI).
His teaching spans ADR, Bankruptcy, Contracts, and Commercial Law, with courses at both foundational and advanced levels. Notable publications include Principles of Alternative Dispute Resolution (4th ed., 2023) and Arbitration Law in America (2006). His work addresses issues like arbitration clauses' constitutional implications, bankruptcy proceedings, and state judicial selection methods.
Professor Ware has contributed to public debates on judicial impartiality, arbitration reform, and consumer rights. He frequently lectures at academic and professional conferences globally and maintains an active presence in media commentary on legal issues.
