Stephen Hill is a Professor of Physics at Florida State University (FSU) and Director of the Electron Magnetic Resonance (EMR) user program at the NHMFL. He holds a BA and D.Phil. from the University of Oxford (1991–1994) and has held faculty positions at Montana State University (1997–2001) and the University of Florida (2001–2008) before returning to FSU in 2008. His research focuses on quantum phenomena in molecular magnets and correlated electron systems, leveraging high magnetic field spectroscopy techniques.
Key research interests include condensed matter experiment, molecular quantum technologies, and instrument development for EPR. His EMR program collaborates across physics, chemistry, and biology departments, supporting 6 full-time staff and up to 10 graduate students. Hill's work has been funded by DOE and NSF grants, emphasizing next-generation molecular quantum technologies.
- Awards: Cottrell Scholars Award (2000), NSF CAREER Award (2003), APS Fellow (2014), EPR Silver Medal (2014), FSU Distinguished Research Professor (2022).
His advising and grants include leadership roles in interdisciplinary projects and contributions to magnetocaloric effect studies, spin qubits, and dynamic nuclear polarization. Hill’s lab develops world-leading high-field EPR instruments, advancing both fundamental science and applied technologies.
