Stephen H. Shenker is the Richard Herschel Weiland Professor of Physics at Stanford University, affiliated with the School of Humanities and Sciences. He previously served as Director of the Stanford Institute for Theoretical Physics from 1998 to 2008.
His research focuses on gauge theory dynamics, conformal symmetry applications in statistical mechanics and string theory, and nonperturbative formulations of string/M-theory. Current interests include cosmological implications and black hole interior physics.
- Awards: MacArthur 'Genius' Grant (1987), Lars Onsager Prize (2010)
His work bridges high-energy physics, mathematical physics, and foundational questions in quantum gravity. He has contributed to covariant quantization methods and matrix models in theoretical physics.
