Stephen Gluck, MD, is a Professor in the Division of Nephrology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. He specializes in acute and chronic kidney disease, electrolyte disorders, kidney stones, and outpatient/home dialysis. Gluck earned his MD from the University of California Los Angeles School of Medicine in 1977.
His research focuses on the vacuolar H+-ATPase (proton pump), its regulation by glycolysis, and roles in renal acidification and osteoclast function. He has extensively studied the enzyme’s structure, subunit interactions, and physiological implications in kidney and bone diseases.
- Education: MD, UCLA School of Medicine (1977)
Current research trends span cell biology, biochemistry, and molecular mechanisms of proton transporters, with applications in renal disease, bone metabolism, and electrolyte homeostasis. His publications highlight collaborations with researchers in nephrology, cell biology, and physiology.
Gluck has received continuous NIH funding since 1974 as a PI or Co-PI for projects including renal genes, growth factors, and urinary acidification. He is affiliated with the UCSF Medical Center and has mentored numerous researchers through academic training programs.
