Stephen Fairweather

Stephen Fairweather is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Australian National University (ANU), affiliated with the Research School of Biology and the Division of Biomedical Science & Biochemistry. He works under the mentorship of Assoc. Prof. Giel van Dooren and Prof. Stefan Bröer, focusing on membrane transporter proteins in pathogens like Toxoplasma gondii and Plasmodium spp. His research integrates biochemistry, molecular biology, and cutting-edge techniques such as high-resolution metabolomics (GC-QQQ, LC-MS/MS) to study amino acid transport mechanisms and their roles in pathogen survival.

Dr. Fairweather holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Biochemistry) and has contributed to projects like the development of a novel membrane protein expression system to replace Xenopus laevis in drug discovery. His work bridges chemistry and biology, emphasizing how transporter function impacts organism-level physiology. Recent advancements include the use of yeast and oocyte systems to study apicomplexan transporters and insights into photosynthetic stress signaling in plants.

His scientific contributions span 17 peer-reviewed articles, with notable focus on substrate specificity, pathogen nutrient acquisition, and structural biology of transporters.
