Stephen D. McCormick is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Biology and Environmental Conservation at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and a Scientist Emeritus at the USGS Conte Anadromous Fish Research Center in Turners Falls, MA. He holds a B.S. from Bates College and a Ph.D. in Oceanography from MIT/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (1983).
His research focuses on environmental and endocrine controls of osmoregulation, growth, migration, and reproduction in anadromous fishes like salmon, shad, and sturgeon. Key areas include climate change impacts, contaminants, and dam effects. He has published over 190 papers and chapters, receiving the 2014 Excellence in Fish Physiology Award for lifetime achievement.
His work bridges fundamental physiology and applied conservation, addressing challenges like acidification, thermal stress, and salinity adaptation. He has collaborated internationally and held visiting positions at institutions in Japan and Canada.
