Stephen Cessna is a Professor of Chemistry at Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), affiliated with the School of Sciences, Engineering, Art and Nursing. He holds a BA from the University of Colorado at Boulder (1991) and a PhD from Purdue University (2000). His research focuses on plant stress responses (terpenoids, antioxidants) and STEM education reform, particularly student retention strategies for underrepresented groups. He has contributed to over 20 peer-reviewed articles and edited books in chemistry education and plant biology.
- Education: BA in Chemistry & Biochemistry (1991, UC Boulder); PhD in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology (2000, Purdue)
Research interests bridge plant biochemistry and education: measuring stress-induced biochemical changes in plants and developing interventions to improve STEM retention. Recent work includes Kazakhstani student environmental attitudes and terpene profiling in conifers.
Key grants include NSF grants totaling $1+ million for STEM retention programs (e.g., 2018 SSTEM grant, 2016 IUSE grant) and USDA-funded organic agriculture research. He serves as JRSMTE Journal Editor-in-Chief and holds EMU administrative roles in STEM education committees.
