Stephen Carter is a Research Fellow in the Department of Virology at the University of Glasgow. His work focuses on cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) and cryo-correlated light and electron microscopy (cryo-CLEM) to study subcellular structures and virus-host interactions. He is affiliated with the Scottish Centre for Macromolecular Imaging (SCMI), where he contributes to advancing cryo-ET workflows using state-of-the-art facilities like the JEOL CRYO-ARM 300 cryo-EM.
- Research Interests: Developing cryo-CLEM and cryo-ET methods for visualizing organelles, interpreting visual proteomic data, and targeting ER compartments like ribosome-associated vesicles and IRE1 oligomers.
- Collaborations: Works closely with colleagues at SCMI and with Dr. Grant Jensen (Caltech) on cryo-ET techniques.
- Grants: Received grants from the Medical Research Council (2024-2029, 2022-2023) and The Royal Society (2023-2024) for projects on secretory phenotypes, Bunyavirus infection, and cryo-EM detector upgrades.
His research spans structural biology, virology, and cell biology, with recent publications emphasizing membrane trafficking, viral capsid interactions, and mitochondrial ultrastructure in disease. He actively fosters collaborative science and method development in cryo-ET.
