Stephen Birkett is an Associate Professor in the Department of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo. His research focuses on piano design, organology, physical systems, animal growth modeling, and environmental systems. He holds a PhD (1990), MASc (1986), and BSc (1976) from the University of Waterloo and King's College London.
He teaches SYDE 114 (Matrices and Linear Systems), SYDE 312 (Applied Linear Algebra), and SYDE 351 (Systems Models 1). Current research includes high-speed imaging of fortepiano actions and the development of corrosion-resistant piano wire (P-wire). He is actively accepting graduate students.
His work bridges mechanical engineering and acoustics, with publications in Journal of Computational and Nonlinear Dynamics and Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. He has pioneered computational models for piano mechanics and explores interdisciplinary applications of physical systems simulation.
