Stephen Bell is the Ohio Eminent Scholar and Professor of Microbiology at The Ohio State University's Department of Microbiology, part of the College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on archaeal chromosome biology, including DNA replication, chromosome organization, and cell division mechanisms. Bell holds a B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Glasgow University, followed by postdoctoral training at the Gurdon Institute (Cambridge) and the MRC Cancer Cell Unit. He has held faculty positions at Oxford University and Indiana University before joining Ohio State in 2024.
Key research areas include the molecular mechanisms governing archaeal DNA replication initiation, chromosome architecture, and the role of ESCRT machinery in cell division. His lab uses multi-disciplinary approaches, combining biochemistry, genetics, and structural biology. Notable achievements include discovering the ESCRT system's role in archaeal cell division and revealing archaeal chromosome's multi-scale organization through chromosome conformation capture technologies.
His work has been published in high-impact journals like *Nature Microbiology*, *Cell*, and *Molecular Cell*. Current projects involve studying topoisomerases in Sulfolobus, chromosome architecture in archaea lacking SMC proteins, and the regulation of coalescin in chromosome organization.
