Stephen Bagwell serves as an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Missouri-St. Louis within the College of Arts and Sciences. His academic work centers on the intersection of international relations, political economy, and human rights, specifically examining how economic factors drive governmental human rights violations and how collective action mechanisms can mitigate these issues.
Bagwell's research spans labor rights, economic inequality, sovereign debt crises, disaster impacts on vulnerable populations, and human rights measurement methodologies. He employs rigorous quantitative analysis to investigate phenomena such as how collective labor rights reduce inequality, the human costs of sovereign default, and pandemic effects on civil liberties. His interdisciplinary approach frequently bridges political science with economics and public health.
As a core member of the Human Rights Measurement Initiative (HRMI), Bagwell contributes to global human rights assessment frameworks used by policymakers and advocates worldwide. His publication record demonstrates consistent focus on quantifying human rights performance through composite indicators while exploring emerging crises like the Hong Kong autonomy erosion and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Bagwell teaches undergraduate courses in world politics, international political economy, human rights, and applied statistics. His office is located in 1D RCEW at UMSL, and he maintains accessibility through email (sbh2g@umsl.edu) and phone (314-516-5855) for student engagement and collaborative research opportunities.
