Stephanie Maas

Stephanie Maas is a part-time Visiting Fellow at the Rotterdam School of Management (RSM) and a researcher/project lead at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam's Centre of Philanthropic Studies. Her research focuses on corporate philanthropy, business-nonprofit collaboration, and volunteering strategies. She completed her PhD at RSM in 2020 with a dissertation on contemporary giving practices. She teaches courses in nonprofit management and social entrepreneurship at both BSc and MSc levels and advises student theses/internships focusing on CSR. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals through research on volunteer inclusion and corporate community involvement.

Key research projects include studies on corporate foundations, impact measurement, and a European-funded service-learning initiative. She advised the Erasmus Consultancy Project in Colombia (2016–2017). Recent publications explore volunteering typologies, gatekeeper strategies, and nonprofit ownership frameworks. Her work integrates qualitative research methods with international case studies (e.g., Shanghai, Cape Town).

Publications since 2021 showcase interdisciplinary insights into volunteering's societal role, corporate social responsibility, and nonprofit governance structures. She collaborates internationally on projects addressing volunteer segmentation and institutionalization of CSR practices.
