Dr. Stephanie M. Burchard is a Professorial Lecturer (part-time) at Georgetown University, American University, and the University of Cape Town. She is a research staff member at the Institute for Defense Analyses in Alexandria, Virginia, and previously served in U.S. government roles, including Director of Policy and Program Analysis in the Office of African Affairs under the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy (2016-2017). Her expertise spans African politics, defense sector institutional capacity, militant group dynamics, and gender-based peace initiatives.
Education: Ph.D. in Political Science from Rice University.
Research focuses on defense sector reforms, election violence in Sub-Saharan Africa, and U.S.-Africa security partnerships. Her 2015 book Electoral Violence in Sub-Saharan Africa: Causes and Consequences and co-authored 2019 article on U.S. military assistance to Africa highlight her engagement with security dynamics and policy analysis.
