Stephanie L. Mudge is Associate Professor of Sociology and Chancellor's Fellow at the University of California, Davis. She is also Series Co-editor of Cambridge Studies in Historical Sociology. Her academic work bridges historical, political, and economic sociology, with deep engagement in the transformation of center-left politics in the West.
Her research focuses on the interplay between political parties, economic ideologies, and expertise. She examines how parties like the Democratic Party, German and Swedish Social Democrats, and British Labour Party evolved from socialist roots to embrace neoliberal policies, largely due to changing relationships with economic professionals. Her work critically analyzes the role of experts in reshaping political strategy and governance, especially within central banks and transnational institutions.
The majority of her recent publications, including her award-winning book Leftism Reinvented, explore the historical and structural shifts in progressive politics. These works span topics such as neoliberalism, monetary government, European integration, and the epistemology of political economy, reflecting a strong interdisciplinary and comparative approach.
