Dr. Stephanie Jurburg is a Deputy Group Leader and Scientist at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ in the Department of Applied Microbial Ecology, leading the Working Group Microbial Interaction Ecology. She holds a PhD in Microbial Ecology from the University of Groningen (2016) and a BA in Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Biology from Columbia University (2012).
Her research focuses on microbial community responses to environmental stressors, including studies on soil, animal, and cheese microbiomes under anthropogenic pressures. Key contributions include developing MiCoDa (Microbial Community Database) and promoting equitable data stewardship through her role as Co-Chair of the Open Science Group at the Global Young Academy and 2023 Ambassador of the Research Data Alliance.
Recent publications highlight cross-environmental microbial recovery patterns, with work on stable isotope probing, agricultural microbiome impacts, and cheese microbiome drivers. She co-leads projects on bioaugmentation limitations and microbial data interpretation, emphasizing collaborative approaches like datathons.
