Stephanie Durrleman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Fribourg, within the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Medicine. Her work focuses on developmental linguistics, autism spectrum disorders, bilingualism, and syntax acquisition. She has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles and books, including monographs on Jamaican Creole syntax and edited volumes on language-cognition links in autism.
Her research investigates how syntax interacts with theory of mind and executive functions in neurodiverse populations, including children with autism, developmental language disorder, and hearing impairments. She has pioneered interventions such as the DIRE (Differentiating Ideas from Reality) app and Magic Memory working memory training programs.
Recent studies include examining Mandarin aspect production in autistic children, co-speech gesture comprehension in autism, and bilingualism effects on social cognition. Her work bridges linguistics, psychology, and neuroscience, with particular emphasis on clinical applications for language-impaired populations.
