Stephanie Cavanaugh

Dr. Stephanie M. Cavanaugh is an Assistant Professor in Historical Studies at the University of New Brunswick, specializing in early modern Spanish history. Her research examines conversion, identity-making, and legal systems in the 16th-17th century Spanish empire.

Education includes:

• PhD in History from University of Toronto
• MA in History from University of Toronto
• BA (Honours) from University of New Brunswick

Research focuses on Morisco communities (Iberian Muslims forcibly converted to Catholicism) and their engagement with legal systems to protect families and properties. Current projects investigate how ideas about blood purity, religious difference, and foreignness contributed to racialized categories in the early modern world.
