Stephan Schlemmer

Prof. Dr. Stephan Schlemmer is a Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Cologne, where he leads the Laboratory Astrophysics Group within the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. His research focuses on investigating the quantum physics of interstellar molecules through specialized spectroscopic techniques. The group develops innovative methods to detect new molecules both in laboratory settings and in space.

His primary research interests include molecular spectroscopy, laboratory astrophysics, quantum physics of interstellar molecules, astrochemistry, high-resolution IR and THz spectroscopy, reaction dynamics, and molecular physics. These areas are interconnected through the common goal of understanding molecular behavior in space environments and developing techniques to detect and analyze interstellar molecules.

The research output shows a strong focus on rotational and rovibrational spectroscopy of molecular ions and complex organic molecules, with particular emphasis on carbon-chain molecules, deuterated species, and complex organic molecules relevant to astrochemistry. His group has made significant contributions to the discovery of new molecules in space, including isobutene, 17O-methanol, and various hydrocarbon ions.

Prof. Schlemmer's group actively mentors numerous students and early-career researchers, with several PhD and Master's students contributing to publications. The group participates in major international collaborations and has secured funding for projects like CRC 1601. They maintain the Cologne Database for Molecular Spectroscopy (CDMS), which is the largest repository of molecular spectra in the millimeter and sub-mm range.

The Laboratory Astrophysics Group operates advanced spectroscopic facilities and maintains strong connections with astronomical observatories, particularly through ALMA observations. They regularly participate in major conferences like ISMS and HRMS, demonstrating active engagement with the international scientific community.
