Dr. Stephan Schilling is a Lecturer at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering at ETH Zürich, where he is part of the Timber Structures group within the Institute of Structural Engineering. His research focuses on the reliability and structural behavior of timber trusses, particularly examining connections between materials.
Education:
- 2022: Doctor of Sciences (Dr. sc. ETH Zürich) with a thesis on structural behavior and reliability of timber trusses with dowelled steel-to-timber connections.
- 2017: MSc ETH Civil Engineering, specializing in Structural & Geotechnical Engineering, with a thesis on tensile connections in beech glulam.
- 2014: BSc ETH Civil Engineering, with a thesis on steel hall design.
Professional Experience:
- Since 2022: Postdoctoral researcher at ETH Zurich’s Timber Structures group.
- 2018–2022: Doctoral candidate at ETH Zurich.
- Prior roles as design engineer and intern at firms like Diggelmann + Partner AG and Gruner Ingenieure AG.
Research Interests: His work emphasizes advanced timber engineering, connection technologies, and sustainable construction practices. He explores how material properties and joint designs impact the reliability of timber truss systems.
Labs/Teams: Active within the Timber Structures research group at ETH Zürich’s Institute of Structural Engineering.
