Stephan Rohrbach is a Researcher at the Institute of Microbiology within the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Leibniz University Hannover. His work focuses on microbial ecology in natural and engineered systems, particularly the interaction between microplastics (MP) and microbial communities. He holds an M.Sc. degree and is part of Prof. Dr. Horn's research group. His research addresses both environmental risks posed by MP-associated pathogens and opportunities for biodegradation of plastics through microbial activity.
His current project within the Collaborative Research Center (CRC 1357 Microplastics) investigates how microbial communities colonize different MP types, assess health hazards, and identify plastic-degrading organisms. This interdisciplinary work bridges environmental science, microbiology, and materials science.
Key research themes include: microplastic-borne pathogens, bioremediation strategies, fungal plastic affinity, and ecosystem impacts. His publications demonstrate expertise in microbial community dynamics, plastic surface colonization, and environmental toxicology.
No scientific awards are listed. While no formal advisees are recorded, his contributions involve collaborative projects with senior researchers like Prof. Horn and Dr. Rambold. Research is conducted at the institute's facilities in Hannover (Herrenhäuser Straße 2, Building 4111, Room A010).
