Stephan Heinzel is a Professor of Clinical and Biological Psychology at TU Dortmund University, appointed since April 2023. He holds a PhD in Psychology from Humboldt University of Berlin (2013) and a diploma in Psychology from Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (2008). His academic career includes roles as a junior professor at Freie Universität Berlin (2016–2023), research associate at Humboldt University Berlin (2014–2016), and research roles at the University of Potsdam (2013–2016). He is licensed as a psychological psychotherapist with a focus on behavioral therapy.
Professor Heinzel’s research focuses on neurobiological mechanisms of mental disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety, OCD), therapeutic intervention efficacy (psychotherapy, exercise, cognitive training), prediction of mental health outcomes, and climate crisis psychology (climate anxiety, education, and behavior). His work bridges clinical psychology with neuroscience and public health challenges.
Recent articles emphasize neurobiological correlates of multitasking, climate emotion validation tools, and pandemic-related mental health impacts. He actively explores cross-cultural behavioral patterns and technological interventions for mental health. His research integrates behavioral, neuroimaging, and ecological momentary assessment methods.
Heinzel’s contributions include developing assessment tools like the Inventory of Climate Emotions (ICE) and leading studies on exercise therapies for depression. His work on obsessive-compulsive disorder mechanisms (e.g., error-related brain activity) has advanced transdiagnostic understanding of psychiatric conditions.
