His academic background includes:
- German Literature and Theology studies at the Universities of Leipzig (Germany) and Aix-Marseille (France)
- PhD from the University of Bristol (2017) with dissertation on the Marxist appropriation of Heinrich von Kleist in East German literature and theatre
Dr. Ehrig's research focuses on interdisciplinary approaches to diversifying research on East German cultural production from pre- to post-1990, with particular interest in 19th to 21st Century literature, theatre, and film. His work intersects East German modernist architecture with film and literature, exploring affective experiences of built environments and their remediated cinematic and literary responses, with attention to perspectives of class, gender, and age. He also pursues projects in urban humanities and transnational/transcultural studies, examining transcultural encounters in urban neighborhoods from transnational perspectives.
His recent scholarly output demonstrates a clear trajectory in East German cultural studies, particularly focusing on urban space, architecture, and film. The publications reveal consistent engagement with socialist urban planning, modernist architecture, and their representations in literature and film, with increasing attention to gender perspectives and transnational frameworks. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary theoretical approaches to space, memory, and cultural production.
Dr. Ehrig has received significant recognition for his research:
- Visiting Scholar Fellowship at DEFA Film Library (University of Massachusetts Amherst, 2022)
- Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (2018-2022)
He has secured substantial research funding, including a €140,022 grant from University College Dublin/Irish Research Council for his project "Socialist Space and Modernist Architecture in East German Literature and Film" (2018-2022), and a £63,000 University of Bristol Alumni Award for his PhD research on "Reception of Heinrich von Kleist in GDR Literature and Theatre" (2013-2017). Dr. Ehrig welcomes supervision of BA/MA dissertations and PhDs on East German history and culture, Film and Television, Urban Cultures and cultural responses to Architecture and Urban Planning, and cultural memory.
