Dr. Steph Gardner is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Sydney's School of Life and Environmental Sciences, specializing in Marine Microbial Ecology. Her work focuses on Antarctic benthic ecosystems, coral physiology, and the role of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) in coral resilience under climate stress. She holds a PhD in Marine Biology from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and has conducted postdoctoral research in Spain and Australia.
Research Interests: Steph investigates microbial interactions in corals, fish, and Antarctic sediments, emphasizing the microbiome's role in environmental adaptation. Her current project, part of the Australian Research Council's Securing Antarctica's Environmental Future (SAEF), explores microbial biodiversity in Antarctica. Key themes include climate change impacts, coral bleaching, and microbial symbiosis.
Awards & Fellowships:
- Superstars of STEM (2021–22)
- Homeward Bound Program (2019)
- Secretary, Australian Coral Reef Society (2020–24)
- Max Day Environmental Science Fellowship (2021 & 2022)
Grants & Collaborations: Lead researcher on SAEF's Biodiversity Status and Trends theme. Collaborates with institutions like the Institut de Ciències del Mar (Spain) and the University of New South Wales.
Labs & Outreach: Advocates for women in STEMM, co-founding initiatives to inspire young scientists. Active in science communication through platforms like The Conversation and Antarctic fieldwork.
