Dr. Stella Coyle is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Law at Keele University. She holds an LLB from University College London (1995), an LLM in Law and Society (2012), and a PhD in Law (2017). Her research critically examines intersections between religious rights, queer theory, and equality law, particularly focusing on how religious exemptions undermine LGBTQ+ citizenship. She teaches undergraduate modules including Legal Essentials, Gender/Sexuality and Law, and Constitutional Law, as well as postgraduate programs in Human Rights, Medical Ethics, and Safeguarding Adults.
Her doctoral work, The Queer, the Cross and the Closet, argues that religious objections to equality laws perpetuate systemic exclusion of non-heterosexual communities. Pedagogically, she emphasizes student wellbeing and innovative teaching methods using tools like Mentimeter. She advises students via dissertation supervision and maintains regular consultation hours during semesters.
Dr. Coyle's publications span legal theory, pedagogy, and queer jurisprudence. She actively participates in academic conferences and contributes to debates on law's role in mediating conflicts between religious freedoms and sexual orientation rights.
