Steffen Siegel is Professor of Theory and History of Photography at Folkwang University of the Arts, where he directs the M.A. program 'Photography Studies and Research' and chairs the Center for Photography Essen. He co-organizes international research seminars at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome.
His research explores photography theory, visual culture, and photobook historiography, focusing on interdisciplinary approaches to visual media and their socio-political contexts.
Recent publications analyze photo-historiographical methodologies and Cold War visual cultures, reflecting sustained engagement with archival practices and transnational image circulation.
Awards include the Research Prize for Photography History (2014) and International Humanities Research Prize (2017).
