Prof. Dr. Steffen Harzsch leads the Cytology and Evolutionary Biology group at Universität Greifswald's Institute of Zoology. His internationally recognized research program integrates neuroethology, evolutionary biology, and climate change impacts on marine invertebrates. Major contributions include groundbreaking studies on crustacean brain evolution and sensory system adaptations across terrestrial/aquatic transitions.
Research encompasses neuroanatomical mapping of chemosensory pathways in crustaceans, environmental stressor impacts on neural development, and deep-sea vent shrimp neurobiology. His 1994 textbook Environmental Organic Chemistry received the Chemistry Book of the Year Award. Current projects examine ocean change effects on larval neurophysiology through DFG-funded initiatives.
Academic service includes DFG review panels and research council leadership. The laboratory employs advanced techniques from micro-CT to immunohistochemistry for comparative neuroanatomical studies.
