Stefan Sinzinger

Professor Stefan Sinzinger serves as Vice President for Research and Young Scientists and Head of Optical Engineering at the Technical University of Ilmenau. A leading expert in optics and photonics with over thirty years of experience, he has driven significant innovations in optical system integration and micro-optics.

His educational journey began with a doctorate at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, followed by research at NEC Research Institute in Princeton and FernUniversität Hagen, leading to his appointment at TU Ilmenau in 2002.

Prof. Sinzinger's research spans holography, optical interconnects, and micro-optics. Current interests include light sheet fluorescence microscopy, tunable micro-optics, and dynamic wavefront synthesis. His work has produced advancements such as compact laser tweezers and algorithms for 3D holographic projections in medicine and displays.

He has been honored with the Fellow of the European Optical Society (2025) and the Edmund Optics Research and Innovation Award (2011). These awards recognize his scientific contributions and dedication to the optics community.

Securing over 20 million euros in third-party funding, Prof. Sinzinger has co-founded two companies and authored over 130 scientific articles. He is deeply committed to mentoring young scientists and promoting optics through outreach initiatives.

Leading the Optical Engineering Group, he fosters a dynamic research environment focused on next-generation optical technologies and their applications in healthcare, computing, and materials analysis.
