Stefan Posse is a Professor of Neurology (primary appointment) and holds a joint appointment in Physics and Astronomy at the University of New Mexico. He leads the Human MR Research Lab within the School of Medicine, focusing on advancing MRI methods for brain function and physiology. His work includes developing real-time fMRI, high-speed metabolic imaging, and presurgical mapping techniques for neurological disorders. He earned his DPhil in Physics from the University of Berne, Switzerland (1990).
Research Interests: Posse’s lab specializes in MRI technology development, including real-time functional MRI (fMRI), proton echo-planar spectroscopic imaging (PEPSI), and biophysical studies of BOLD contrast. Key areas include neuro-oncological imaging, metabolic mapping of brain tumors, and applications in psychiatric and neurological disorders. His projects are NIH-funded and emphasize clinical translation.
Publications: Recent work includes advancements in concurrent fMRI-MRSI, real-time resting-state fMRI in brain tumor patients, and high-frequency resting-state connectivity analysis. These studies highlight innovations in imaging sensitivity, temporal resolution, and clinical utility.
Grants & Labs: Active NIH grants support his research on presurgical mapping and metabolic imaging. The lab collaborates on multi-modal approaches integrating fMRI, EEG, and MRSI for precision medicine. The Human MR Research Lab is located in the Biomedical Research Facility, UNM.
