Stefan Mertens is a Research Fellow at KU Leuven, affiliated with the Physical Activity, Sports & Health Research Group and the Lab for Media Culture & Policy. His work focuses on political communication, social media analysis, and refugee discourse, with a particular emphasis on the Syrian and Ukrainian refugee crises and their portrayal on platforms like X/Twitter.
Stefan's research explores networked framing, discursive dynamics, and climate change-induced migration using mixed-methods and network analysis. He is involved in the OPPORTUNITIES project (101004945 – H2020), analyzing political discourse trends in Belgium, Germany, Italy, and Sweden.
His publications highlight cross-national comparisons, media strategies, and public opinion on migration. Stefan collaborates with scholars like Dr. S. Kiyak, Dr. D. De Coninck, and Prof. L. d'Haenens to investigate social media's role in shaping narratives around refugees and global challenges.
