Stefan Maneval is a Visiting Professor at the Institute for Islamic Studies, Free University of Berlin since 2021. Previously, he held a research fellowship at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (2018–2021), focusing on religious diversity and collective identities in Lebanon. His academic journey includes roles as a research fellow at Orient Institut Beirut (2017–2018) and as a research assistant at Europa-Universität Flensburg (2016–2017). His doctoral work (2010–2015), supervised by Ulrike Freitag and Schirin Amir-Moazami, explored "The Architecture of Everyday Life in Twentieth Century Jiddah".
Research interests span material/visual culture, gender studies, collective identities, public spheres in Muslim societies, and European discourses on Islam. Key publications include Forms of Migration (2022, co-edited) and Faith Travels by Streetcar (2021). His 2019 monograph New Islamic Urbanism examines Jeddah's urban development.
