Stefan MAGEZ

Prof. Dr. ir. Stefan MAGEZ is an academic staff member at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), where he leads research in the Immunoparasitology Team. His work focuses on African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness), investigating infection-induced immunopathology and pathways of parasitemia control. Based in Room E8.01 at VUB's Brussels campus, his research aims to develop new diagnostic, vaccination, and treatment strategies for this parasitic disease affecting humans and livestock across sub-Saharan Africa.

Dr. MAGEZ's primary research interests center around understanding the mechanisms of African trypanosomiasis, particularly the role of TNF in infection-associated anemia and B-cell memory destruction. His team utilizes Nanobody® technology to develop targeted diagnostic tools and treatment modalities that can recognize parasite antigens in infected patients' blood. They study parasite strains causing human sleeping sickness (T. rhodesiense and T. gambiense) as well as those affecting livestock (T. congolense, T. vivax, T. brucei, and T. evansi). His research has revealed crucial insights into parasite compounds involved in inflammatory TNF-mediated responses, helping explain why anti-trypanosome vaccination strategies have historically failed.
